Abstinence,truth or hoax?
Why do some people pretend?
It is okay sweetheart, we can wait until marriage and since we love each other it should not be a problem." Hundreds say those words no doubt, but question is how many actually mean them or even bother to stand by them? Words from the lips taste like honey. By nature, human beings always want to be associated with things regarded as positive, so as long as something or situation can paint them in beautiful colours be sure they will want to associate with it. So it is no wonder to find people wanting to be the Virgin Mary herself.
To abstain or not to abstain is not the question here. The question is which is worse: appearing to abstain but really sinning in secret or to forget about the front and act real. The funny thing about abstinence is that it is not written on one’s face, it is only later, by some stroke of bad luck, one falls victim to sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy. Otherwise one is bound to get away with lying that they are abstaining if they are pros at the lying game. Keeping in mind that every dog has its day, you will be discovered sometime. As much as abstinence is stereotypically the rule of born again Christians, it is not necessarily always the case. The ordinary young people are practising too, and quite a number of people lie about it.
Tony was like a dream come true to Bridget, unlike all the other men she had met before him. The word abstinence seemed to be music to his ears. The relationship kicked off with promises of waiting until marriage and everything seemed to be working out fine. Naturally there were temptations, as there always are if two people are in love. Day in day out they managed to cope, especially because Tony never pressured Bridget into sex. The tale sounded too good to be true to her friends. They began a quest to discover whether Tony had some dirt under his carpet, but it was soon called off because he seemed so clean. But he was not.
The bombshell landed just when Bridget was getting used to the idea of marrying Tony. She discovered that he not only had another partner, but was also having more than his fair share of sex while he lied to her that he was abstaining. The shock was so great that to date she has found it hard to trust another man. Luckily for him, the outward signs of his deception were not visible. Ladies are not blessed with that luck.
Think of that seemingly composed 'holier than thou' neighbour's daughter who never fails to lecture you on morals. She simply seems to have her morals so upright that you and your friends always speculated about whether she is gay, floating or frustrated. Only to be shocked by the latest gossip that she is constantly bulging, which could only mean pregnancy and the whole neighbourhood becomes bombarded with questions; how, when, who, where? For some it is a matter of celebration because she has finally fallen for all the talk or given up the pretence of abstinence.
"Deception is very popular because people have learnt how to take advantage of the situation in hope of gaining respect as well as popularity, especially if one is dating a diehard saved person," says Denis Kato, an accountant. She is not alone in her opinion. Harriet Agaba, a student, agrees: "Many times, the need to pretend is geared by peer influence, if all my friends are claiming to be abstaining it is hard to admit that you are not, lest they segregate you or start lecturing you."
According to Consolate Nyesigire, a social worker and counsellor at Nsambya Homecare, many people lie about abstinence because they want to appear noble to people like parents, peers, church leaders or even partners in cases where sex is done with another person. "People, especially the young, must stand by their word and be truthful because lying will only lead to embarrassment but also STI's," she advises. So make up your mind and forget about the games. If it is abstinence so be it, just do not lie to the whole world.
